Next.js vs WordPress for a small business website

The short answer

For most small businesses that want a fast, secure site that rarely changes structure, a custom Next.js site exported as static pages is faster, safer and cheaper to keep running than WordPress. WordPress still makes sense if you publish constantly and want to edit everything yourself in a dashboard.

Speed

A static Next.js site is built once and served as plain files, so there’s no database query on every page view. WordPress sites can be fast, but usually only after caching plugins, a good host and careful theme choices. Out of the box, static wins, and speed affects both rankings and how many visitors stay.

Security and upkeep

Most WordPress problems I see come from outdated plugins and themes. A static site has no admin login to brute-force and no plugins to patch. There is simply less to go wrong, which matters when nobody on staff is watching for updates.

Editing

This is WordPress’s real strength. If you want to log in and change anything yourself, any time, it’s hard to beat. With a custom Next.js site, most of my clients text or email their changes and I publish them the same day. For a business that updates its site a few times a month, that’s usually easier than learning a dashboard.

SEO

Both can rank well. The difference is that with a custom build, SEO structure is part of the code: every service and city page comes from shared templates, structured data matches each page automatically, and there’s no plugin conflict quietly breaking your metadata.

Which should you choose?

Choose WordPress if you publish several times a week and want full control in a dashboard. Choose a custom Next.js site if you want:

  • The fastest possible load times on phones
  • Very little maintenance and a smaller security risk
  • A design that doesn’t look like a theme
  • SEO structure built in rather than added with plugins
